Exact and heuristic solution approaches for the mixed integer setup knapsack problem

چکیده
We consider a class of knapsack problems that include setup costs for families of items. An individual item can be loaded into the knapsack only if a setup cost is incurred for the family to which it belongs. A mixed integer programming formulation for the problem is provided along with exact and heuristic solution methods. The exact algorithm uses cross decomposition. The proposed heuristic gives fast and tight bounds. In addition, a Benders decomposition algorithm is presented to solve the continuous relaxation of the problem. This method for solving the continuous relaxation can be used to improve the performance of a branch and bound algorithm for solving the integer problem. Computational performance of the algorithms are reported and compared to CPLEX. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A fuzzy mixed-integer goal programming model for a parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times and release dates
This paper presents a new mixed-integer goal programming (MIGP) model for a parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times and release dates. Two objectives are considered in the model to minimize the total weighted flow time and the total weighted tardiness simultaneously. Due to the com-plexity of the above model and uncertainty involved in real-world scheduling probl...
متن کاملA Local Branching Approach for the Set Covering Problem
The set covering problem (SCP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem. This paper investigates development of a local branching approach for the SCP. This solution strategy is exact in nature, though it is designed to improve the heuristic behavior of the mixed integer programming solver. The algorithm parameters are tuned by design of experiments approach. The proposed method is te...
متن کاملTwo meta-heuristic algorithms for parallel machines scheduling problem with past-sequence-dependent setup times and effects of deterioration and learning
This paper considers identical parallel machines scheduling problem with past-sequence-dependent setup times, deteriorating jobs and learning effects, in which the actual processing time of a job on each machine is given as a function of the processing times of the jobs already processed and its scheduled position on the corresponding machine. In addition, the setup time of a job on each machin...
متن کاملHeuristic Approaches for Solving the Multidimensional Knapsack Problem (MKP)
There are exact and heuristic algorithms for solving the MKP. Solution quality and time complexity are two main differences among exact and heuristic algorithms. Solution quality is a measure of how close we are from the optimal point and time complexity is a measure of the required time to reach such point. The purpose of this paper is to report the solution quality obtained from the evaluatio...
متن کاملMeta heuristic for Minimizing Makespan in a Flow-line Manufacturing Cell with Sequence Dependent Family Setup Times
This paper presents a new mathematical model for the problem of scheduling part families and jobs within each part family in a flow line manufacturing cell where the setup times for each family are sequence dependent and it is desired to minimize the maximum completion time of the last job on the last machine (makespan) while processing parts (jobs) in each family together. Gaining an optimal s...
